This project took place during the period when I was making a series of
hangings for the Christie Hospital.
To connect with those panels the
same theme of water was chosen. The style was based on Japanese
Sashiko and Indian Kantha work which both use simple running stitch to
build up pattern.
Patients, carers and staff in the Outpatients waiting area were invited to
take part in the sewing project. They chose their fabric and thread from
a small selection provided. The short time most had available meant
that they tended to choose ready drawn panels although some did
devise their own patterns.
Panels unfinished by one participant were finished by others, some took
panels home and returned them finished on their next visit. The size of
each panel enabled particiupants to work on their laps without leaving
the waiting are and risk missing being called. The completed panels
were assembled into a wall hanging and finished to the same style as
the other hangings.
The project provided an alternative focus of activity in the busy and
stressful waiting area and provided a calming activity for the participants.
