St George's Primary School

Some of the 132 Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils at St George's showing off the finished hangings.
As part of Big Arts Week 2005 I spent a week in St George's Primary School, Stockport working with all Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils, 132 in all, and their teachers making three African themed wall hangings. "It is important that they understand that there is more to the continent than poverty and Aids."  Each pupil designed their own panel based on African textiles they were shown and used their design to make a quilt panel with fabric and stitching.  For many this was the first time that they had tried sewing and certainly the first time they had made textile art.  The 132 panels were later made up into hangings
Head teacher Mrs Buckley's reaction on seeing the completed work was "I am delighted with the brilliant work the children produced. Margaret has been an inspiration to staff and children alike."
